Blogging about not blogging

My other career is as a musician. For years I really regarded my web work as a day job, until one day I realized that I loved it and was pretty good at it. Since, I’ve treated both as careers and it’s been interesting looking at both and how one influences the other in my life.

A lot of being both a musician, and a web developer (even as a lacky employee) is PR. How do you make your voice (or the voice of your employer) heard on the web? Promotion. Lots of promotion. Every little bit of good (and sometimes bad) helps get you attention. I won’t go into the personal brand rant here, but I’m realizing it’s more and more important. But I digress.

Twitter Antipixel web badge

Okay, here’s a small one. I’m a fan of  web badges on blogs (learn more at the Wikipdia page), especially the “antipixel” ones, since they were the original. They are cute, stylish to the point and there are a couple slick generators for making new ones. Too easy. But I’ve not been able to find a nice one for Twitter so I made my own. Use in good health.

Looking for a PHP-with-Zend developer

I have an interesting idea for a to-do list/reminder site. I want to release it completely free to help people (and to get our names out there). I’ve got the domain, I’ve got the web space, and I’ve got the gen’l ideas worked out.

I want to concentrate on just designing and implementing this. I’m looking for a Zend/PHP person to help think this thru and then do the back-end. It will be a fun, not-to-intense evening and weekend project (shouldn’t take more than a couple weeks) that I think will get us some good attention.

Introducing the Crayonbox Color Picker plugin for jQuery

In one of the products we’re unveiling soon, we need a color picker. But looking at the ones available, nothing was simple enough. Our users don’t need a Photoshop-like interface. They need a few simple colors. Like choosing crayons from a box…

Running with the metaphor, we created the Crayonbox Color Picker. It inserts as many or as few color choices as you want next to an input field. It’s really simple to install, and configure, and doesn’t need any images, just a little styling. And most importantly, it’s really simple to use.

Welcome to the new Gelform blog on web development and design

I am excited to finally start my first web-related blog. I’ve created and used “blog” software as a musician for years. Even before they were called blogs. But while I’ve contributed to the web world with forum posts and jQuery plugins, I’ve not felt compelled to document my own path. Times change and I feel like I now have more to contribute. Watch this space for thoughts on usability, interactive design, web design and development.
